DEAR BOBTAIL OWNER, FRIEND, CLUB MEMBER & OVERSEAS OWNER,
We are on the move but cannot continue without your help. This
loving breed needs your involvement to enhance our gene pool and
ensure safety in future breeding plans.
You may or may not be aware of the problems that exist within
our breed but unfortunately they do.
With help and advise from Dr Jeff Sampson in conjunction with
the KENNEL CLUBS health initiative.
Dr Cathryn Mellersh of the Animal Health Trust has agreed to
take on our plight and ensure the future of this noble breed.
The most advanced problem is hereditary cataracts and this is
where she has agreed to start.
Phase two is down to us!!!!!
The Animal Health Trust requires a blood sample, Copy pedigree
and any certificates ie; Eye Test and Hip score and any other
relevant to your OES. Send these in confidence to the address
on the form (which is self explanatory) Dr Mellersh will store
this information until she has enough to start the research.
Sons, daughters, Uncles, Aunts, Grand Parents and Great-grand
Parents the more the merrier.
Family Groups of Ten minimum make a nice gathering.
If every blood sample from every OES was sent to the Health Trust
immediately then this work could begin now!!!!
Urgently required is 20 AFFECTED Animals (more if available) and
any litters affected?
This is where we ask you to think deeply for the love of your
breed, so that these samples can be made available.
Remember as i have written before there is no disgrace OR shame
in breeding an affected animal. The problem only begins when you
hide the truth.
This research will happen.
PLEASE, PLEASE help to make it happen as soon as possible.
The sooner we can breed in safety the sooner we can be sure this
noble breed will continue to exist in its glorious form.
Did i mention money??????
The Breed Council and several other Clubs have already agreed
to donate money. Hopefully others will follow;
Sponsorship, fundraising and private donations can be sent to
OES HEALTH via The Breed Council.
The Kennel Club will help us but only if we are seen to helping
ourselves.
Date to remember, 23 rd October 2005, Breed Seminar. Dr Jeff Sampson
explains DNA (tickets available here on the Breed Council website).
On this note I close, wishing you and your pets the very best
of health and happy showing for the rest of 2005.
Yours Faithfully
Trevor Mills
